SAFETY INFORMATION
►Before taking TOPOL-XL, tell your doctor if:
Toprol-XL may not be right for everyone, especially people who have the following health conditions:
- Extreme slowing of the heart rate
- Sudden and severe drop in the blood pressure and blood flow through the body because the heart is not pumping normally
- Uncontrolled heart failure
- Slowdown of the heart’s electrical signal causing a slower heart rate
- Damage to the heart’s natural pacemaker that affects the heart’s rhythm unless a pacemaker device is in the body
- Any allergies to Toprol-XL (active ingredient: metoprolol succinate) or any of its ingredients
►Who should not take TOPOL-XL:
- Patients who have asthma or asthma-like lung disease should, in general, not take Toprol-XL.
- Your doctor may not want you to take Toprol-XL if
- you are taking certain types of high blood pressure medicine
- have diabetes
- have overactive thyroid disease
- have a hardening of the arteries in the arms or legs
- are having major surgery.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
►SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS:
Because of the possibility of serious side effects, such as chest pain or a heart attack, you should not stop taking Toprol-XL suddenly. If your doctor decides you should stop taking Toprol-XL, you may be instructed to slowly reduce your dose over a period of time before stopping it completely.
►MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS:
In patients with high blood pressure, the most common side effects were:
- tiredness
- dizziness
- depression
- diarrhea
- itching or rash
- shortness of breath
- slow heart rate
If you experience any of these or other side effects, contact your doctor.
DRUG INTERACTION
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the drugs below before deciding to take Toprol XL:
- heart medications such as Nifedipine (Procardia, Adalat), reserpine (Serpasil), verapamil (Calan, Verelan, Isoptin), diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor XR), clonidine (Catapres), digoxin (Lanoxin), doxazosin (Cardura), guanadrel (Hylorel), prazosin (Minipress), or terazosin (Hytrin)
- diabetes medications such as insulin, glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase), glipizide (Glucotrol), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), or metformin (Glucophage)
- nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others), naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail), and others
- respiratory medications such as albuterol (Ventolin, Proventil, Volmax, others), bitolterol (Tornalate), metaproterenol (Alupent, Metaprel), pirbuterol (Maxair), terbutaline (Brethaire, Brethine, Bricanyl), or theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theochron, Theolair, others), and others
- the stomach medication cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB)
- prescription or over-the-counter cough medicines, cold medicines, or diet pills
Other drugs not included in the list above may also have adverse reactions when taken with Toprol XL. Have a talk with your doctor before deciding to take other prescribed or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins & minerals, and herbal products.
