PROTONIX is a prescription drug that is used to treat and maintain healing of erosive acid reflux disease, also known as erosive GERD (breaks in the lining of the esophagus), and relieve associated symptoms that may include frequent and persistent heartburn and stomach acid backup. Most patients heal within 8 weeks of treatment. Doctors may prescribe PROTONIX beyond 8 weeks to maintain healing or to prevent a recurrence of your symptoms. Controlled studies did not extend beyond 12 months.

►Do not take PROXONIX and tell your doctor if:
- you are allergic (hypersensitive) to pantoprazole (active ingredient) or any other ingredient in PROTONIX or PANTOPRAZOLE
- if you are taking medicines with a compound called atazanavir (to treat a HIV-infection)
►Take special care with PROTONIX:
- if you suffer from a severe liver disorder. Please talk to your doctor who will decide whether the dose has to be adjusted. Also the doctor may decide to do regular checks of your liver enzymes.
- if you ever had a deficiency of vitamin B12, please tell your doctor who might then check your vitamin B 12 levels.
- if you have recently lost weight or suffer from recurrent vomiting, pain on swallowing or vomiting of blood, or if you have experienced blood in your stools or very dark stools you should talk to your doctor. Your doctor might possibly perform additionally diagnostics (e.g. gastroscopy = visual inspection of the gullet, stomach and upper intestine). Please also tell your doctor if your symptoms persist despite adequate treatment with this medicine.
►Children below 12 years of age:
Please do not give PROTONIX to children below 12 years of age as there is no experience with PROTONIX in children below 12 years of age
►Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. There are no adequate data from the use of pantoprazole in pregnant women. It is not known whether the active substance passes into breast milk. Therefore, during the entire pregnancy and breast-feeding period, you may only use PROTONIX if your doctor is convinced that the benefits of the treatment for you outweigh the risks for your unborn child/baby.
►Driving and using machines
PROTONIX has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines. However, the appearance of some side effects like dizziness and blurred vision may affect your ability to react, which in turn might impair your ability to drive and operate machinery.
►Important information about some of the ingredients of PROTONIX
If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.
►If you stop taking PROTONIX
Always talk to your doctor, before stopping treatment with PROTONIX on your own initiative or ending treatment before you should. If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
►Other medicines
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, PROTONIX can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The assessment of side effects is based on the following frequencies:
►STOP TAKING PROTONIX IMMEDIATELY and see your doctor if you experience one of the following symptoms::
- swelling of the face, tongue, and throat
- difficulty with swallowing
- skin reactions with blistering or ulceration, and hives.
- difficulty with breathing
- severe dizziness with increased pulse rate and sweating
►COMMON SIDE EFFECTS:
- headache
- upper abdominal complaints
- diarrhea
- constipation
- flatulence.
►UNCOMMON SIDE EFFECTS:
- dizziness
- visual disturbances such as blurred vision, nausea and vomiting
- allergic reactions, e.g. itching and skin rash.
►RARE SIDE EFFECTS:
- dry mouth
- painful joints
- depression
- hallucination
- disorientation and confusion, especially in patients having a tendency to these symptoms as well as the worsening of these symptoms in case of pre-existence.
►VERY RARE SIDE EFFECTS:
- loss of white blood cells (which increases the risk of infections)
- loss of blood platelets (which increases the risk of bruises and bleeding)
- inflamed kidneys (interstitial nephritis)
- wheal formation
- swelling of the skin or mucous membranes (angioedema)
- severe reactions of the skin and mucous membranes accompanied by blistering (Stevens-Johnson
syndrome, erythema multiforme) - Lyell’s syndrome (“scalded skin syndrome”)
- increased sensitivity to light (photosensitivity)
- muscle pain
- swelling of the lower arms and legs (peripheral oedema)
- increased body temperature, hypernatremia in the elderly
- severe allergic reaction manifested as acute general symptoms such as rapid pulse
- excessive sweating and substantial drop in blood pressure
- severe liver damage resulting in jaundice with or without liver failure
- increased liver values
- increased serum lipids
- gynaecomastia.
DRUG INTERACTION
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Please tell your doctor if you are taking one of the following medicines:
- Medicines to treat fungal infections (e.g. ketoconazole or itraconazole) and other medicines for which it is known that their blood levels depend on the acid secretion in the stomach.
- Medicines to thin your blood (so called “coumarin-derivatives”, like pheprocoumon or warfarin) in which case your doctor would have to control the clotting properties of your blood.
- Atazanavir for the treatment of HIV infection, which you must not take together with PROTONIX
